Kids' Journal of Family Changes

A Safe Space for Kids to Write, Draw, and Feel Through Divorce

Wooden House Books

The Kids' Journal of Family Changes gives children a place to write, draw and color their way through a separation or divorce, at their own pace. It is for kids ages 6 to 10, with more than 80 writing, drawing and calming activities across 120 pages.

Any page can be skipped, and any prompt can be drawn instead of written. Kids choose what they share. The pages say "grown-ups" rather than mom or dad, so the journal fits many kinds of families.

Inside:

  • A page near the front that says clearly: it is not your fault
  • A family drawing page and a short list of family-change words, explained simply
  • Questions, wishes, holidays, birthdays and telling friends
  • Sad, worried, mad and mixed-up days, with gentle things to try
  • Packing lists, hello and goodbye cards, and calm spots for days spent moving between homes
  • Coloring pages, drawing games and a paper folding game
  • A short guide for grown-ups on privacy, support and when to get help

Kids can work in it on their own. Younger readers may want a grown-up nearby to read a prompt aloud or help with the folding steps.

A companion to The Kids' Book of Family Changes. For kids 9 to 12, see The Private Journal of Family Changes.
